Carpenter

What is a Carpenter

A Carpenter is a tradesman who undertakes construction and maintenance projects in the building trades.

Roles of a Carpenter

Within South Western Sydney Local Health District the roles are:

  • Maintenance, installation, repair and construction of joinery, walls, cupboards and partitions.
  • Maintenance, installation and repair of all hospital timber & gyprock fixtures and lock installations.

All works are to be done in accordance with Australian Standards and/or relevant codes.

Career Opportunities

Within SWSLHD there is a four tier grading system. The grade as well as pay increments with an increase in qualifications and experience through to Engineers position. Leading
Hand and Supervisor opportunities are available. SWSLHD encourages involvement in further education through in-house courses and study leave for external courses.

Qualifications Required

  • Trades Certificate for Carpentry
  • Trades Certificate for Joinery

These are formal qualifications obtained through TAFE courses and experience.

Supervision Required

A comprehensive orientation program is provided for all new staff members with ongoing support. This is generally provided by the leading hand or supervisor. A Trades Certificate Carpenter usually requires minimum supervision.
