Fitter

What is a Fitter?

Fitters assemble parts to repair and maintain machinery and equipment. They utilise a
variety of hand and machine tools in a workshop or onsite setting.

Roles of a Fitter

Within South Western Sydney Local Health District the roles are:

  • Disassemble, repair and reassemble equipment
  • Monitor plant and machinery.
  • Maintain plant and equipment.
  • Work in a safe manner with workshop equipment.

Career Opportunities

Within SWSLHD there is a four tier grading system. The grade as well as pay increases as more qualifications and experience is obtained. Career development opportunities could lead to an Engineers position. Leading Hand and Supervisor opportunities are available. SWSLHD encourages involvement in further education through in-house courses and study leave for external courses.

Qualifications Required

  • School Certificate (Year 10) preferably with passes in maths, science and metalwork.
  • Fitter and/or Fitter Machinist Trade Certificate

These are formal qualifications obtained through TAFE courses and experience.

Supervision provided

A comprehensive orientation program is provided for all new staff members with ongoing
support. This is generally provided by the leading hand or supervisor. A qualified Fitter
usually requires minimum supervision.

  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Able to make decisions and problem solve
  • Able to work as an integral part of a team
  • Able to work unsupervised
