Midwife

What is a Midwife?

A midwife is a qualified health professional who works with women, families and communities providing care, advice and support throughout pregnancy, birth and after birth.

What does a career in Midwifery involve?

A midwife is responsible and accountable for care of women during pregnancy, conducting births and providing care for the woman and her baby. Midwives are involved in education such as health promotion, antenatal and parenthood classes, reproductive health and caring for the new baby.

Career Opportunities

There are exciting opportunities for Midwives – they can practice in the hospital, home, communities and clinics and work closely with other members of the health care team.

What qualifications do midwifes have?

There are 2 entry points to midwifery.
The first is Direct Entry to a Bachelor of Midwifery which is full-time over 3 years at an accredited university (currently the University of Technology, Sydney). This course provides the opportunity to gain registration as a midwife without having become a registered nurse beforehand.

The second is as a registered nurse who is currently registered with the NSW Nurses’ and Midwives Board and completes a 12-month postgraduate diploma in midwifery (full-time) at an accredited university.
