Library Technician

What is a Library Technician?

A library technician will usually work under the supervision of a librarian and will have a strong focus and vital role in customer service.

Library technician’s duties cover all facets of library functions including circulation, acquisitions, reference and audiovisual.

What Qualifications do you need?

Typical Tasks may include

  • Assisting with loan and reference queries at the desk or by phone
  • Assisting with internet and online database searches
  • Maintaining library resources, records and systems
  • Entering and editing data into a computerised Library Management System
  • Operating and maintaining photocopiers and printers
  • Managing document delivery through interlibrary loans including database searching such as Libraries Australia
  • Operating and maintaining audiovisual equipment
  • Developing and presenting promotional programs, including displays and library tours
  • Undertaking basic copy cataloguing of library materials
  • At a senior level technicians may supervise other library or clerical staff; manage a small library or information service or head a section in a large library.

Career Opportunities

Library technicians work in state and local government libraries, tertiary institutions, government departments, hospitals, research companies, large and small private organisations and schools.
