What is a Sterilising Technician?

The Sterilisation Technician is responsible for the cleaning, disinfection, inspection, packing, sterilisation, storage and distribution of the Central Sterilisation and Supply Department's sterile goods.

Roles of a Sterilising Technician

  • Collection, cleaning, assembly, packaging and disinfection or sterilisation of instruments and holloware.
  • Operation of associated equipment and machinery according to policy and procedure.
  • Decontamination and packaging of anaesthetic equipment.
  • Reporting any breakages or faulty equipment to the O.H & S representative or your staff supervisor, ensuring the department functions safely and efficiently at all times.
  • Keep work areas tidy, clean and restocked.

Career Opportunities

Sterilization Technician works closely with Technicians and nursing staff from operating suite – Ambulatory Surgical Unit – All associated with dental clinical school for the timely provision of surgical instrumentation and other equipment used for surgical procedures.

Qualifications Required

To become a sterilisation technician you need to have good communication skills in both oral and written English. Participate in 20 weeks Departmental Training programme to gain knowledge technology and techniques. And willingness to undertake the Sterilisation Technology Course Certificate III. Ability to utilise on the job training in-service.

Supervision Required

A comprehensive orientation program is provided for all new staff members with ongoing support.

  • Proven ability to work within a team.
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of and commitment to quality improvement.
  • Sterilizing Technology internal and external courses attendance.
  • Flexible approach to work practices.
  • Computer literacy.
