Clinician Preceptoring Guide
The SWSLHD clinician preceptor’s role is to work with the student to provide them with day to day clinical instruction and experiences. The preceptor also works to complete student assessment requirements relevant to their clinical placement program, guides the student’s professional development and ensures that the student stay within their scope of practice.
Some of the characteristics of an effective preceptor includes the following:
- Maintains and promotes patient safety at all times
- Effective communication skills including active listening and able to provide clear directions and timely constructive feedback
- Role-modelling evidence-based professional practice and behaviours
- Facilitate the student’s orientation to the ward/department
