In a first for the Australasian region, Liverpool Hospital will host a comprehensive robotic surgery training day specifically aimed at surgical and nursing trainees.
Professor Les Bokey, Director of Surgery and Research, South Western Sydney Local Health District, said the three day training event would also include introductory training in using the Mimic robotic simulator.

A donation of 10 wheelchairs from the Royal Freemasons’ Benevolent Institution (RFBI) is set to benefit patients at Bowral & District Hospital.

To mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on Friday 15 June, Amanda Larkin, the District’s Chief Executive signed a Statement of Commitment alongside representatives from the NSW Police Force, Aged Care, Multicultural Health, Aboriginal Health and National LGBTI Health Alliance Silver Rainbow.

Patients are experiencing better health and wellbeing and improving their chances of survival thanks to two exercise programs offered through the Macarthur Cancer Therapy Centre at Campbelltown Hospital.

Generous bequest to boost cancer, heart research (PDF)
Cancer and heart patients at Liverpool Hospital will benefit from a $750,000 bequest from an anonymous donor for medical research.
The bequest will be split equally between cancer research, heart research and a general donation to the hospital. In the last financial year South Western Sydney Local Health District invested $15 million in medical research.

Campbelltown’s world-class cancer care (PDF)
Campbelltown Hospital’s outpatient cancer clinic, the Macarthur Cancer Therapy Centre, has been rated the best in New South Wales for the second year in a row.
The Bureau for Health Information’s 2016 Outpatient Cancer Clinics patient survey found the Hospital was significantly better than the NSW average on 19 questions, the best of any cancer centre in the state.

Doctors and medical staff across China will have access to the latest information in geriatric care after a senior Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital clinician’s textbook was translated into the Chinese language.
A team of Chinese doctors, including senior staff in the geriatric department of the Peking Union Medical College Hospital, has worked for more than two years on the translation of Professor Daniel Chan’s textbook Chan’s Practical Geriatrics.

The 10 volunteers at the unit raised the money to fund the $888 purchase of the Reverie Harp after the instrument’s success in soothing patients and promoting relaxation in palliative care in Australia and overseas.

New research means difficult veins no longer a painful problem (PDF)
Nurses at Liverpool and Campbelltown Hospitals have developed a new cannula insertion method set to make life easier for patients with veins that are difficult to access.
The research team, led by Liverpool Hospital Clinical Nurse Consultant and Western Sydney University Senior Lecturer, Dr Evan Alexandrou, developed a protocol that uses ultrasound to guide the insertion of catheters for these patients.

Director of the Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital unit, Dr Kaleab Asrress, said heart disease remained the biggest killer in Australia, as well as south western Sydney. The Cardiac Interventional Unit, officially launched today, would change the lives of patients with heart disease, and help with the fight against it, he said.
