Echocardiography Training at Liverpool ICU

Liverpool ICU has an active and exciting Critical Care Ultrasound Training Programme. Our broad case mix offers a perfect opportunity for trainees to learn from complex cardiovascular cases. Training is delivered by a dedicated Echocardiographer for the department and ICU Specialists with extensive experience in Critical Care Ultrasound.

The Focused Cardiac Ultrasound (FCUS) Programme offers a comprehensive, structured training pathway for critical care trainees, fulfilling the mandatory basic echocardiography requirements from CICM while also offering the opportunity to complete the widely recognised certificate from ASUM.

Training usually takes 9- 12 months to be completed. The mandatory foundation course is followed by structured regular hands-on bedside teaching and weekly review/reporting sessions. Upon successful completion of their logbook and assessments, participants are presented with a certificate.

Our ICU department also has regular critical care ultrasound teaching sessions on topics including lung, cardiac, and vascular ultrasound. For those interested in building on their FCUS training, there is also the opportunity to work towards certification in intermediate and advanced-level critical care echocardiography training.
