Liverpool Hospital
Intensive Care Unit

Visitor Information

ICU welcomes patient visitors and provides support for them. There are no specified visiting hours. An Administrative Officer located at the reception desk in the waiting room assists relatives and friends by identifying the location of the patient they wish to visit.

The Administration Officer will clarify the patient’s ability to receive visitors with the bed-side team caring for the patient. If the patient is able to have visitors, the relatives/friends will be given access to the unit. If they are unable to receive visitors at the time, a reason and estimate of when they will be able will be given. Restricted visiting may be required for specific procedures and this will communicated to family/visitors.

Visitors unfamiliar with the ICU will be escorted to the bed-side on at least the first occasion. All visitors need to wash their hands and use alcohol based handrub for hand hygiene prior to entering the patients’ bed area, consistent with the ICU infection control policy. Aprons are to be used in certain cases as directed by the ICU staff.

In general only 2 visitors per patient are allowed at the bed-side, however specific requests can be discussed with the Nurse In-Charge or ICU Nursing Managers. If there is no Administrative Officer present, the relatives/friends can use the telephone available at the front desk and ring directly through to the appropriate unit, and wait until staff open the door and allow them access to the ICU.

Flowers

For the purpose of infection control, flowers will not be allowed into the unit.
