Liverpool Hospital
Intensive Care Unit

Our Commitment to Research

As a teaching hospital of the University of New South Wales and Western Sydney University, a member unit of the ANZCIS Clinical Trials Group, and the provider of the highest level of intensive care in SWSLHD, Liverpool ICU is highly committed to research.

Liverpool ICU facilitates, promotes and participates in high quality collaborative research into all aspects of critical illness, focusing on improving patient-centred outcomes. The Director of ICU Research (Conjoint Assoc Prof Anders Aneman) and the Research Coordinator (Jennene Miller) oversee the increasing research activities in the unit. Research projects may be conducted solely within Liverpool ICU, in collaboration with other services at Liverpool Hospital or within the ICU community at a district, state, national and/or international level.

Research projects include:

  • clinical trials,
  • pharmaceutical trials,
  • observational studies,
  • bioinformatics,
  • quality improvement projects.

All research undertaken conforms with all current guidelines related to the conduct of human medical research. This includes the World Medical Association Declaration of Helsinki, Ethical Principles for Medical Research Involving Human Subjects, International Conference on Harmonisation Good Clinical Practice (ICH-GCP) Guidelines for clinical trials, and the Therapeutic Goods Association (TGA) schemes for clinical trials. Research projects are approved by the local SWSLHD Human Research Ethics Committee and receive Site Specific Approval (SSA).

Research Update meetings are held at least quarterly and are announced on the ICU Weekly Education Schedule. The Journal Club also presents ample opportunities to link with the ICU research activities.
