DEPARTMENT OF CARDIOLOGY
CAMPBELLTOWN HOSPITAL

The Department of Cardiology, Campbelltown Hospital is made up of an Inpatient Ward, Diagnostic Unit and Interventional Suites (Cath Lab)

Coronary Care Unit

CCU is a 26 bed unit made up of the following:

  • 6 Acute Coronary Care Beds – these are in single rooms and used for acutely ill patients who require a greater nurse to patient ratio.
  • 4 Cardiac Assessment Unit Beds – 1 room of 4 beds. These beds are used for short-stay patients with chest pain usually requiring an Exercise Stress Test.
  • 4 Sub Acute Monitored Beds – 1 room of 4 beds. These are used for more stable patients needing close cardiac monitoring. Patients usually are transferred from an acute bed to this area.
  • 8 Telemetry Monitored Beds – 2 rooms of 4 beds. These are used for stable patients who need to be monitored whilst ambulating
  • 4 unmonitored beds – 1 room of 4 beds. These are used for patients who do not require cardiac monitoring but need to remain in hospital for ongoing intervention.

Cardiology Diagnostic Unit

Cardiology Diagnostic Unit performs Inpatient and some Outpatient Cardiac testing.

  • ? ECG
  • ? 24hr Holter Monitoring
  • ? Echocardiogram
  • ? Transoesophagael Echocardiogram
  • ? Stress Echocardiogram
  • ? Exercise Stress Testing
  • ? Dobutamine Stress Test

Interventional Suites

The Interventional Suite has 2 Cardiac Catheterisation Lab with state of art technology. The Interventional Suites performs both Inpatient and Outpatient Services including:

  • Diagnostic Coronary Angiograms
  • Percutaneous Coronary Interventions (PCI)
  • Electrophysiology Studies

Medical Staff

The Cardiology Department has 10 Cardiologists and an Advanced Trainee divided into 3 teams consisting of:

  • ? Blue Team – 3 Cardiologists, Registrar and Junior Medical Officer
  • ? Red Team – 4 Cardiologist, Registrar and Junior Medical Officer
  • ? Green Team – 3 Cardiologist, Registrar and Junior Medical Officer

Dr Upul Premawardhana (Director) – MBBS(Hons Adelaide), MMed (Syd), FRACP
Dr Premawardhana is the Director of Cardiology at Campbelltown Hospital. He is a Senior Staff Specialist in Cardiology and Electrophysiologist at Liverpool and Campbelltown Hospitals. He is a conjoint lecturer at UWS. Dr Premawardhana has interests in Atrial Fibrillation Flutter, Supraventricular Tachycardia and Ventricular Arrhythmia.

Dr Aiden O’Loughlin – MBBS, BSc(Med)(Hons), MBiostat, PhD, FRACP, FCSANZ
Dr O’Loughlin is the Director of Cardiovascular Research at Campbelltown and Camden Hospitals. Dr O'Loughlin completed training in cardiology at St Vincent's Hospital and a fellowship in interventional cardiology at Westmead Hospital in Sydney and a postdoctoral fellowship in interventional cardiology at Stanford Hospital in the United States. Dr O'Loughlin is an Academic Interventional Cardiologist with expertise in interventional cardiology, medical devices, and clinical trials. Dr O’Loughlin is employed as an academic by the School of Medicine of Western Sydney University.

Dr Hashim Kachwalla – MBBS, FRACP, FCSANZ
Dr Kachwalla is a Senior Staff Cardiologist at Campbelltown and Liverpool Hospitals. He is a senior conjoint lecturer of the University of Western Sydney with an interest in teaching and research. His main clinical interests are Echocardiography, Interventional Cardiology and heart failure.

Dr Ali Toufaili – MBBS (Syd Hons), FRACP
Dr Toufaili is a Staff Specialist at Campbelltown Hospital. Dr Toufaili is the Director of Coronary Care Unit at Campbelltown Hospital and a Conjoint Lecturer at the University of Western Sydney.

Dr Phong Nguyen – MBBS, FRACP, FCSANZ, FSCAI
Dr Nguyen is an Interventional / Consultant Cardiologist at Campbelltown and Liverpool Hospitals and Director of the Cath Lab at Campbelltown. Dr Nguyen is a Conjoint Lecturer at University of New South Wales and University of Western Sydney. His interests are in the area of interventional research and teaching.

Dr Krishna Kadappu – MBBS, MD, MRCP(UK), FRACP
Dr Kadappu is a Staff Specialist at Campbelltown Hospital and performs procedures at Campbelltown and Liverpool Hospitals. Dr Kadappu specialises in Echocardiography and Interventional Cardiology. He has ongoing research interests in this area.

Dr Matle Fung – BSc(Med) MBBS MHL FRACP FCSANZ
Dr Fung is a Cardiology Staff Specialist at Campbelltown Hospital and a Conjoint Lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine of the Western Sydney University. Dr Fung specialises in cardiac imaging and is actively involved in clinical research and medical education and training. Her current research focuses on the use of echocardiography and non-invasive cardiac imaging, with special interests in heart failure, valvular heart disease and hypertensive cardiomyopathy.

Dr Justyn Huang – MBCHB(UK) FRACP
Dr Justyn Huang is a Consultant Cardiologist who has sub-specialised in Advanced Cardiac Imaging. He is a Conjoint Lecturer at the University of New South Wales. Dr Huang's interests are in Echocardiography, Cardiac CT and Cardiac MRI.

Dr Tuan Le Nguyen - MBBS (1st Hons), PhD, FRACP, FHRS
Dr Tuan Le Nguyen is a staff specialist Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist at Liverpool and Campbelltown Hospitals. He has clinical expertise general cardiology and subspecialty expertise in cardiac electrophysiology including catheter ablation, pacemakers, defibrillators, cardiac rhythm monitoring and cardiovascular imaging including echocardiography, and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. Dr Nguyen has also recently been awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at the University of New South Wales. He is also a conjoint lecturer at the University of NSW.

Dr Tamer Badie - MBBS (Hon), FRACP, FCSANZ. FSCAI.
Dr Badie is an Interventional Cardiology consultant at Campbelltown and Liverpool Hospitals. He is a conjoint lecturer of the University of Western Sydney and University of New South Wales, with an interest in teaching and research. His main clinical and research interests are echocardiography, coronary angiography, complex coronary angioplasty, Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and septal ablations. Structural heart interventions including TAVI [Transaortic valve implantation].
