Pulmonary Function Laboratory

The Pulmonary Function Laboratory at Liverpool Hospital has state-of-the-art testing equipment for a range of respiratory investigations for both inpatients and outpatients.

Pulmonary Function Tests performed include:

  • Spirometry - pre and post bronchodilator, erect and supine
  • Full screening test - pre and post bronchodilator spirometry, lung volumes (plethysmography, nitrogen washout), diffusing capacity
  • Bronchial challenge testing - methacholine and mannitol
  • Respiratory muscle strength - maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressures
  • Arterial blood gases
  • Cardiopulmonary exercise testing
  • Allergy testing - skin prick testing to airborne allergens
  • High altitude simulation test
  • Shunt study
  • Forced oscillation test

All tests are performed in accordance with the Australian Thoracic Society standards.

Appointments:

For an appointment all referrals must be emailed to SWSLHD-LiverpoolPFL@health.nsw.gov.au or faxed to        02 8738 4102.  Referrals will be triaged according to clinical need. The patient will receive an appointment letter. Patient’s contact details must be correct to avoid delays in appointments.

On the day please bring your referral letter and current Medicare card. Medicare registered patients are bulk-billed and do not incur any out-of-pocket expenses. Overseas visitors are required to pay a fee per service.

If required, trained interpreters are available to assist patients during testing. Interpreters are free of cost and can be arranged by our receptionist when booking appointments.
