Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Exercise training is one of the key interventions most likely to improve outcomes in patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and patients recovering from long Covid, proven to improve breathlessness on exertion and quality of life.

The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program at Liverpool Hospital is an outpatient program which integrates exercise training (supervised by a physiotherapist) with education sessions from occupational therapy, social work, dietetic, asthma educator, respiratory liaison nurse, and physiotherapy interventions to improve outcomes in patients with COPD.

The 6-minute walking test and St George Quality of Life Questionnaire is used to:

1. Monitor the effectiveness of the program; and
2. Tailor the exercise program to each individual patient.

The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program is conducted either in hospital or home-based telehealth exercise program can also be offered.

Any patient with breathlessness due to COPD or long Covid can potentially gain from pulmonary rehabilitation. Referrals are accepted from any medical officer/GP however all patients entering the program should have their diagnosis and medical management reviewed by a respiratory physician prior to entry into the program.
