EducationNursing New staff is supported via a comprehensive orientation tailored to the individual nurse’s requirements, taking into account previous experience. Generally, staff commence in Special Care, with a number of days spent with the clinical nurse educator (CNE) and then supported by an assigned preceptor, working closely in a buddy arrangement and progressing to shared workload as the staff member becomes more familiar with the working environment. Professional development programs are offered for ongoing training and support of nursing staff. These include a number of work packages, support through learning and applying new clinical practices, and treatment modalities to ensure safe, best practice. As the nurse develops increased skills and confidence he/ she are transitioned to Intensive Care. All nurses working in NICU are encouraged to undertake post graduate studies in Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing.
