Congratulations on the birth of your baby

Welcome to the NICU at Liverpool Hospital, it is our privilege to be caring for your baby.

Parents as partners in the care team, are encouraged spend as much time as possible with their baby. For parents or nominated primary carers, there are no restrictions on the hours of attendance.

Siblings may visit between the hours of 10am and 8pm and must supervised at all times. We recommend that all siblings have a completed immunisation schedule for their age.

Children under 16, who are not a sibling are not permitted in the NICU.

Extended family may visit between the hours of 10am and 8pm but must be with a parent of the baby.

Up to 3 adults at one time can be with the baby, but one of the 3 must be a parent of the baby.

After 8pm only parents may be present in the NICU.

What to expect when visiting the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Precious babies and minimising infection:

Babies have immature immune systems and are vulnerable to infection.

NICU infection control standards are' Bare below the elbows'. Consequently, you will need to remove your jackets and bracelets/watches prior to washing your hands upon entering the unit and before seeing your baby.

Everyone entering Newborn Care is required to wash their hands and forearms thoroughly or using the alcohol-based hand rub thoroughly. It is also important to wash your hands before and after touching your baby each time, using the alcohol hand rub at the bedside.

Please assist us in preventing the spread of infection in the NICU.  If you feel unwell; have a runny nose, coughing, flu, diarrhoea, rash, vomiting, cold sores or any other infectious illness, do not enter the NICU.

If you are unsure about any illness, please call or discuss this with the nurse looking after your baby or the nurse in charge.

Immunisation against whooping cough, influenza and COVID are strongly recommended.

Mobile phones, tablets, and other personal electronic devices must be cleaned with neutral detergent wipes prior to use in the NICU. Devices should be kept on silent or quiet mode at all times while in the unit.

To minimise noise, reduce infection risk, and support a calm care environment, making or receiving phone calls at the bedside is not recommended. Parents and visitors are encouraged to use the parent lounge or other designated areas for phone calls.

Parent Lounge
Parents have access to a lounge area which has a kitchenette, with tea and coffee supplied. A microwave and fridge are also available to use. Lockers are available to parents.
