Redevelopment

The $123.7 million redevelopment of Bowral & District Hospital is providing high-quality care close to home for the Southern Highlands community.

The redevelopment was designed in consultation with clinicians, community members, health planners, infrastructure experts and NSW Health to meet the needs of the community now and into the future.

It is creating modern, state-of-the-art facilities while enhancing and preserving the hospital’s almost 135-year history.

The hospital’s landmark buildings and gardens featuring century-old magnolias are being carefully preserved and enhanced as part of the works.

Stage 1 - complete

The $68.7 million Stage 1 redevelopment was completed in December 2020 and features a contemporary Clinical Services Building including a new hospital entrance, emergency department, operating theatres, adult and paediatric inpatient wards, rehabilitation spaces and new maternity and birthing suites.

Stage 2 - in progress

The $55 million Stage 2 redevelopment is well underway and will complement the inpatient care provided to the community in Stage 1.

A new Outpatient Centre, the centrepiece of the Stage 2 redevelopment, will include expanded and purpose-built:

  • Allied Health services and therapy spaces for physiotherapy, speech pathology, cardiac rehabilitation/diagnostics, occupational therapy, social work and dietetics;
  • Medical clinics including general medicine, geriatrics, diabetes, podiatry and respiratory; and
  • Aboriginal Dreaming Garden.

Located in the hospital’s former administration building dating from the 1930s, the Outpatient Centre, known as The OC, is retaining many of its original features and its much-loved gardens.

The Milton Park building is also being repurposed to accommodate administrative, educational and back-of-house services in one centralised location, the General Services Building, which will include:

  • Clinical information department
  • Education and Simulation centre
  • New mortuary
  • Loading dock
  • Administration unit
  • other back-of-house services.

Stage 2 early works completed in 2021/22 include the central sterilising services department, pharmacy and a new and expanded renal unit.

The new Aboriginal Dreaming Garden will provide a culturally safe space for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.

Developed in consultation with the Aboriginal community, the garden includes a dreaming circle and stonework forming a place of healing, learning and connection.

Bowral & District Hospital is part of an integrated and collaborative network of services. It is supported by the major tertiary referral hospitals in south western Sydney and the broader Sydney region, ensuring the community also has access to specialist services if needed.
