Redevelopment
The $123.7 million redevelopment of Bowral & District Hospital is providing high-quality care close to home for the Southern Highlands community. The redevelopment was designed in consultation with clinicians, community members, health planners, infrastructure experts and NSW Health to meet the needs of the community now and into the future. It is creating modern, state-of-the-art facilities while enhancing and preserving the hospital’s 130-year-plus history. The hospital’s landmark buildings and gardens are being carefully preserved and enhanced as part of the works. Stage 1 - complete
The $68.7 million Stage 1 redevelopment was completed in December 2020 and features a contemporary Clinical Services Building including a new hospital entrance, emergency department, operating theatres, adult and paediatric inpatient wards, rehabilitation spaces and new maternity and birthing suites. Stage 2 - in progressThe $55 million Stage 2 redevelopment complements the inpatient care provided to the community in Stage 1, ensuring the hospital can provide both acute and subacute care in our purpose-built facilities. The new Outpatient Centre (OC) consolidates our allied health, medical and nursing outpatient clinics in a centrally located hub. Located in the hospital’s former administration building, the OC has retained many of its original features which blend harmoniously with the new fit-out to provide contemporary clinical treatment and therapy spaces. A key element of the Stage 2 redevelopment is the Aboriginal Dreaming Garden which provides a culturally safe space for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.
Developed in consultation with the Aboriginal community, the garden continues to evolve. A dreaming circle and stonework form a place of healing, learning and connection. The construction of a yarning space within the garden will be a safe and welcoming space for all.
The final phase of the Stage 2 redevelopment is progressing. The former Milton Park building is being repurposed to accommodate administrative, educational and back-of-house services over three levels in one centralised location. The transformation of the former Maternity Ward on the ground floor into a modern loading dock and back-of-house engine room accommodating the supply, stores and linen departments is well underway. When complete, the General Services Building will include:
Stage 2 early works completed in 2021/22 include the central sterilising services department, pharmacy and a new and expanded renal unit. An additional back-of-house lift became operational in the Stage 1 Clinical Services Building in August 2025. Bowral & District Hospital is part of an integrated and collaborative network of services. It is supported by the major tertiary referral hospitals in south western Sydney and the broader Sydney region, ensuring the community also has access to specialist services if needed.
