Volunteer Activities

Volunteers provide direct patient and carer support in the hospital palliative care inpatient ward/unit and in patient’s homes.


Monthly BBQs are a great time for staff, volunteers, patients and families to relax, enjoy laughter &chatter.

The volunteer notice board is used to promote important information and celebrations to patients, staff, families and visitors to the hospital. 

 

Carers Day Activities

During National Carers Week volunteers are actively involved in events across the local health district.  They assist to decorate, welcome carers and engage in the activities ensuring all who attend are , they ensure that all who attend are acknowledged and made to feel special.

 

Memorial Services
Each year across the local health district memorial services are conducted and volunteers are invited to attend. The memorial service gives volunteers the opportunity to catch up with those they have supported in hospital or at home. The picture below features the volunteers and staff all ready to meet and greet loved ones before the memorial service.

The Jolly Trolley
Volunteers serve alcohol, cheese and crackers, soft drink and chocolates creating a home like feel and atmosphere of enjoyment with light hearted humour for patients, their family and friends to enjoy. The Jolly Trolley too gets dressed up for special occasions.

Volunteers are fully compliant with policy and procedures regarding responsible service of alcohol & food handling.

 

The Arts Trolley

Run by the volunteers the art trolley provides a creative atmosphere where patients and families can explore, create and express themselves.

Fundraising
Donations in cash and kind are received through the generosity of the community, volunteers and staff.  The Palliative Care Volunteer Service also holds a bi-annual Trivia Night and fundraisers throughout the year to assist with patient related activities.

Musicians spread Christmas cheer at Liverpool hospital palliative care ward and Camden Hospital palliative care unit.

National Palliative Care Week & Dying to Know Day
Each year volunteers assist in promoting palliative care to the wider community during National Palliative Care Week held in May and Dying to Know Day held in August of each year.

Enhancing the Patient’s Experience through Arts and Health Music Program
In 2014 a piano was brought into the Liverpool Hospital Palliative Care Ward and volunteer musicians perform on a regular basis.  Musical performances filter through the ward and balcony complementing the clinical care provided. 

Condolence Card Writing
Volunteers assist writing condolence cards and bereavement letters to families on behalf of the palliative care service
