The highly anticipated, $25 million Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital Emergency Department (ED) redevelopment project is now complete and already improving the experience for patients, visitors and staff.

The careful planning and extensive input from staff and community has delivered an enhanced ED with increased capacity, additional treatment spaces, the latest technology, and a new layout designed to better streamline the flow of patients, improving emergency care for the Bankstown community.

Art played a significant role in the redevelopment, and visitors to the ED are now greeted with a colourful welcome in the waiting room, complemented by wall murals throughout the new spaces.

Indigenous artist Amy Lea Hill collaborated with local Elders to create a multi-panel artwork called ‘The River Communities’ that celebrates the Indigenous stories surrounding the area of Canterbury-Bankstown. The Children’s ED also features bright animal themed artwork.

South Western Sydney Local Health District would like to thank the project team, including Health Infrastructure, project managers Capital Insight, project builders Hindmarsh, and the many hospital staff involved in bringing the project to fruition.

Planning is underway for a new $1.3 billion Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital, which will be built on a new site. The process to identify a site is currently underway. Construction is expected to start prior to March 2023. The redeveloped ED will allow Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital to continue to meet the emergency needs of the community until the new hospital is operational.

October 2020 – New building completion acknowledged by Ministerial visit

Following completion of the extension component of the $25 million Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital Emergency Department Redevelopment project, Minister for Health Brad Hazzard and Member for East Hills Wendy Lindsay visited the hospital on 1 October to see the new building first-hand.

Just days after becoming operational in late September, the new facility was already receiving rave reviews, with both staff and patients welcoming the bright, contemporary feel of the new building.

“This multi-million dollar upgrade is a fantastic boost for south western Sydney, ensuring world-class healthcare at the community’s doorstep and allowing more patients to be treated more quickly for better health outcomes,” Mr Hazzard said.

Works continue on refurbishment of existing spaces, and once complete, the new ED will provide additional adult and paediatric treatment spaces, increased capacity in the short-stay unit and more resuscitation beds, as well as a new waiting area. The project is due for completion in early 2021.

The NSW Government has announced $1.3 billion to build a new Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital on a new greenfield site, with planning and site investigations underway.

February 2020 – Solid start to new emergency department

Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital has reached an exciting milestone with the recent completion of the concrete slab for the $25 million emergency department (ED) redevelopment.

Following the turning of the first sod to mark the commencement of construction in late October 2019, works are progressing well on the project, which will see an expansion of the hospital's ED.

Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital General Manager Peter Rophail said the redevelopment would deliver contemporary facilities with improved patient care to help meet the needs of the growing and ageing population.

The project will include a combination of new build and refurbishment of the existing ED and we're excited to see the construction reach this milestone.

Internal works are ongoing, including the recent ED entrance changes and temporary relocation of the waiting room to facilitate the build.

"This is a new journey for the hospital and the local community, and we’re encouraged by the level of interest as the project takes shape," Mr Rophail said.

More than 100 cubic metres of concrete was brought into the site for the 600 square metre slab.

"It's exciting to see the concrete pour as it shows that we are making progress towards our new ED," said Mr Rophail.

"Once the slab has cured, we’ll see construction work like framing and scaffolding go up to build the new ED."

Hindmarsh Constructions Australia is the contractor for the construction of the ED, bringing a wealth of major project experience to the redevelopment.

The new ED will include more treatment spaces, a separate paediatric waiting area, additional resuscitation beds and short-stay capacity.
