Feto-Maternal Unit

Home

The Feto-Maternal Unit (FMU) is a mainly outpatient service that offers expertise to obstetricians in the management of complex pregnancies.

If either you or your unborn baby have existing or potential high risk medical concerns you may be referred to the unit as it is the Tertiary Feto-Maternal Medicine Referral Centre for the South Western Sydney Local Health District (SWSLHD). The unit works in conjunction with other specialties including Clinical Genetics, Neonatology and Paediatrics.

FMU was set up in 1995 by Associate Professor J Smoleniec in conjunction with Dr R Guaran (Neonatologist) as a part time service in the Radiology Department. It is now a full time service operating Monday-Friday with 3 Staff Specialists, 2 Fellows, 1 sonogapher, 2 midwives and 2 clerical staff.
