PHARMACY

The Oncology Pharmacy Department is serviced by a team of dedicated pharmacists and technicians who work closely with the medical team and nursing staff to ensure the safe and efficient delivery of chemotherapy and immunotherapy to cancer patients. They work together to provide medication counselling to all new patients and ongoing support in matters relating to medications.

Pharmacists use their knowledge of the patient, the disease and the drugs being used to identify and resolve any drug-related problems. Technicians are responsible for the handling, preparation and dispensing of drugs. Pharmacy staff also provide information to other health care professionals about possible side effects or drug-related problems.

The Pharmacy department supports doctors and patients to access compassionate supply and cost-share programs for medications not covered by the PBS. Upon enrolment to a program and providing financial consent, the Pharmacy team can procure and dispense medications to patients. We support the use of biosimilar medications. Biosimilar medications present an opportunity to ensure the sustainability of the PBS and support the ongoing listing of newer and more expensive treatments.

Participation in Clinical Trials is another important service provided by the Pharmacy team. The purpose of clinical trials is to find ways to more effectively prevent, diagnose, or treat disease. Trials are managed and conducted in accordance with GCP -Good Clinical Practice Guidelines.
