Special Care Nursery

Campbelltown Hospital Nursery is a Level 4 Unit supporting over 4000 local births per year. The Special Care Nursery predominantly cares for babies born after 32 weeks gestation. As part of the tiered Area service NETS may transfer babies to Campbelltown that require Level 4 care, including bubble CPAP. This is a major site for the management of premature babies post discharge from the major Neonatal Intensive Care Units of Sydney. This 16 cot facility has approximately 800 admissions and 44 -51 transfers per year. The Unit will increase to 32 cots in the new development, the anticipated opening of this will be in 2022.

Special Care Nursery provides comprehensive and compassionate care of newborn infants and their families’. We are committed and dedicated to quality, education, staff development and research. The mission of the Special Care Nursery staff is to improve the health and wellbeing of newborn infants and their families.

This is a major teaching site for nursing and medical students for The University of Western Sydney.

Major achievements include:

  • Pioneering the use of Bubble CPAP for infants with respiratory distress.
  • Dedicated Advanced Neonatal Resuscitation area with Support with the "Vision for Life" camera system to help teleconference with State Wide NETS retrieval team and intensive care units.
  • First Metropolitan Hospital to use the State-wide Neonatal Database (NICUS) as part of clinical information system and clinical handover by nursing and medical teams.
  • Oxygen Pulse Oximetry documentation on all babies prior to discharge.
  • Transcutaneous Bilirubin measurements for jaundiced babies - resulting in less blood testing.

Visiting Hours: Campbelltown SCN now has new visiting hours 10am - 12pm and 4pm - 6.30pm. Four support people can visit during visiting hours with a maximum of two people at the bedside and all visitors must show proof of vaccination against whooping cough. Visitors are nominated by the parents and remain the same four visitors for the duration of the stay. Parents may visit 24/7. No visitors may visit without a parent present. Only siblings under the age of 16 are allowed to visit.

Current visiting hours are restricted due to Covid-19. Mothers are encouraged to visit whenever they wish. If this mother is unwell and unable to visit (usually in the immediate time after birth), the father may visit. Once the mother is able to visit, she is the only visitor to SCN. We encourage the use of Face Timing to include other family members.
