Screening/Fluoroscopy Procedures

Fluoroscopy (screening) procedures is the process of taking multiple low dose x-rays together in order to create continuous real time images to allow visualisation of movement occurring in the body system.

Contrast agents may be given in a variety of ways and the route depends on what test has been requested. These contrast agents help to highlight the area to allow better visualisation. There are numerous examinations that make use of fluoroscopy such as barium enemas, barium swallows and cystograms.

  Preparation

There are various preparations to be followed depending on the examination requested by your doctor. The reception staff will advise you on any specific instructions when you make your appointment.

It is important to follow any instructions required for the examination as these will ensure you receive a safe and accurate examination. If you are currently taking any regular medications then continue unless there are specific instructions not to do so.

You will need to bring along any previous x-rays relating to the area examined.

It is important to inform a member of staff as soon as possible if you are pregnant or suspect you are pregnant BEFORE the test is performed. The examination may not be appropriate or special considerations or precautions might need to be taken.
