WHAT DO WE DO?
The Department of Nuclear Medicine & PET at Liverpool Hospital performs a wide variety of diagnostic and therapeutic Nuclear Medicine procedures using state of the art equipment. A full range of FDG and Ga-68 Somatostatin receptor PET studies are available to patients, with prompt appointment schedules and report generation.
WHAT ARE NUCLEAR MEDICINE & PET?
Nuclear Medicine and PET are specialised fields of medicine that involve the use of small amounts of safe radioactive tracers to detect and treat medical problems. PET stands for Positron Emission Tomography. A scanning machine called a Gamma Camera or PET/CT Scanner creates images of the function of organs and different areas of the body to help diagnose medical problems and monitor the effects of treatment.
Information obtained using Nuclear Medicine & PET procedures complements other imaging procedures because it demonstrates organ function not just structure. The result is that many diseases and cancers may be diagnosed much earlier, as it provides diagnostic information of pathological processes before the onset of structural changes.
HOW DO THE RADIOACTIVE TRACERS WORK?
The radioactive tracer is administered to the patient via a small injection, inhalation, or swallowed as a tablet or liquid, depending on which type of scan is ordered. The radioactive tracer targets specific areas of the body, and the Gamma Camera or PET/CT Scanner takes scans of the body while the patient lies on a bed.
Side effects or allergic reactions are extremely rare, as the radioactive tracers are usually based on water and not iodine like X-ray dyes. Patients can eat, drink, and drive a car after having a Nuclear Medicine or PET scan, and will not feel sick or dizzy. Patients will not glow in the dark either!
