Liverpool Hospital Orthopaedic Department

Liverpool Hospital is a major metropolitan trauma and teaching hospital located in Liverpool, in south west Sydney. The Orthopaedic Department treats mainly trauma, but is linked to other orthopaedic departments in other hospitals in the area (mainly Fairfield and Campbelltown Hospitals) which treat a mixture of minor trauma and elective conditions.

Clinical Activities

The department treats nearly 2,000 inpatients each year, mainly for orthopaedic trauma (fractures) and is a major referral centre for major trauma. The orthopaedic surgeons on staff are: Dr Richard Walker (department head), Dr Ray Chin, Dr Chandra Dave, Dr Jay Dave, Professor Ian Harris, Dr Martin Laird, Dr David Lieu and Dr James Powell. Each of the surgeons is a member of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Australian Orthopaedic Association and has considerable experience in orthopaedic trauma. The Clinical Nurse Consultants for the department are Lynette McEvoy and Kylie Gaffey, who lead the audit and quality and safety activities, and are also involved in research activities related to these areas. The department is supported by office staff under the direction of the office manager, Tamara Gommermann.

Research Activities

Academic activities are led by Professor Ian Harris and Dr Justine Naylor. Professor Harris is the Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the South Western Clinical School of the University of New South Wales (based at Liverpool) and Dr Naylor is the Senior Research Fellow for the department. They are both Directors of the Whitlam Orthopaedic Reseach Centre, which is housed in the Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research. Prof Harris and Dr Naylor supervise and direct all research activities in the department, which is the main orthopaedic research centre for the area. Students from UNSW are supervised for clinical and research activities through the department, and the department also houses several full time and part time PhD and Masters students. The academic activities are supported by the academic secretary, Shirley Cross. The department has a high research output mainly concentrated on clinical research, particularly related to quality and safety, patient satisfaction, surveys, clinical trials, systematic reviews and epidemiology in surgery. The research activities are summarised and updated on the Whitlam Orthopaedic Research Centre website.
