Diagnostic Ultrasound and Interventional Nephrology Service

  • The service is provided by Nephrologists at Liverpool hospital, experienced with ultrasound and interventional procedures.
  • Services include: diagnostic renal ultrasound; real-time ultrasound guided native or transplant renal biopsy; insertion/exchange and removal of tunnelled haemodialysis catheters; the insertion of peritoneal dialysis catheters and ultrasound assessment and monitoring of haemodialysis fistulae and grafts.
  • All imaging is performed with ultrasound � a fast, portable, safe non radioactive method of imaging.
  • All interventional procedures are performed as day cases under local anaesthesia.
  • All these services are provided within the renal unit � avoiding the need to visit multiple departments and unit � �a one stop shop.� However, we are linked with allied specialties of vascular surgery and interventional radiology.
  • The Liverpool Renal Unit is the only metropolitan/teaching hospital in Australia to provide such services for kidney/dialysis patients.
  • We seek to promote the safe, timely and seamless provision of these services to all kidney patients and particularly dialysis patients.
  • This service has been recognized by the Australian Council of Healthcare Standards in 1508 for excellence in patient safety and outcomes

24-Hour Blood Pressure Monitors

  • The 24 hour blood pressure monitoring will automatically monitor and store your heart rate and blood pressure over a 24 hour period. 
  • A cuff is attached to the arm (underneath clothing) and will be inflated every half hour during the day and night.
  • The machine is picked up and return is organised for after a 24 hour period.
  • Referrals to this service are required by Staff Specialists.
  • Appointments are required.
  • No cost for Medicare patients.
