Child Assessment Team

Frequently Asked Questions

1.  What assessments does the CATS team do?

A  The assessments we use depends on your child’s age and your concerns. In younger children, we usually assess development using the      Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development. In children over 3 ½ years, we usually use the Griffiths Mental Development Scales. In all      children we assess adaptive function using information you give us about your child’s support needs at home. This way we can be sure that      our assessment reflects your child’s true abilities.

In children who have already had a developmental assessment or cognitive (intelligence) test, we may do the Autism Diagnostic Observation      Schedule if there is a question about Autism.

2. Why do I have to fill out all the forms/paperwork sent home?

 A. We like to know about your child’s skills and behaviour at home and preschool. You don’t need to fill in these questionnaires if you      have any difficulties or concerns about filling them in. The Parent/Carer Questionnaire gives us contact and health information. The Parent      Stress Index (PSI) lets us know how you are coping at home. The Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL) and Language Development Survey tells      us about your child’s behaviour and language. The Preschool Questionnaire, completed by your child’s preschool teacher gives us      information about your child’s progress at preschool.

3. How do I know if my child needs a repeat assessment?

A.  Usually your child will only need one assessment.  If your child was very young, that is two or two and a half years old, when we saw      them they will need to be reassessed before school. If you are unable to have this done privately, through your early intervention service or      through the school system we can provide these assessments. Another reason to have your child reassessed is if there is concern that      the diagnosis has changed.

4. What and who should I bring to the assessment?

A   We encourage both parents to come to the assessment .  If your partner cannot attend please bring a support room.  Our assessment      room is small. We prefer that other arrangements be made for siblings.  Please bring any past medical and developmental reports, our      questionnaires, a drink and a snack for your child and a list of questions and concerns.
