Campbelltown Hospital

Hospital Description and Primary Features

Campbelltown Hospital is a 306-bed hospital located in the semi-rural regions of Western Sydney, about 60 km from the centre of Sydney.  It is located in the fastest growing area of Sydney.  Campbelltown Hospital offers most specialties (other than neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, vascular surgery, and ENT).  It has an excellent emergency department (being the third largest, in terms of presentations, in NSW), a growing oncology department, and a large paediatric department (the largest in Sydney, other than the dedicated children's hospitals).

Terms Available

Terms available to interns include aged care/rehabilitation, cardiology, respiratory medicine, oncology neurology, renal/endocrine, gastroenterology, general medicine, general surgery (general/breast, general/upper gastrointestinal, and colorectal teams), urology, orthopaedic surgery, and emergency medicine (term descriptions available here).

Terms available only to residents include psychiatry, palliative care, obstetrics & gynaecology, and paediatrics (term descriptions available here).

Further Training

There are a small number of senior resident (i.e. SRMO) positions available.

Campbelltown Hospital is part of the St Vincent's basic physician training network and at least 1 representative from Campbelltown is part of the annual St Vincent's basic physician training interviews.  As far as surgical training goes, basic surgical trainees in the Sydney South West network rotate out to Campbelltown.  CMOs and junior medical staff work in the ED.  The paediatric department has SRMOs and registrars that rotate out from Sydney Children's Hospital.

Campbelltown Hospital has strong links with the UWS medical school, and there are opportunities for junior doctors to formally and informally teach medical students.

Facilities

There is a JMO room on level 2 of block A , near ICU (with lockers, computers, and fridge).  There is a good library on level 1 of block B, near medical administration.  Parking is available in the staff sections of the hospital carpark for free, as long as parking permit is displayed.

Hospital Development

Campbelltown Hospital is undergoing significant enhancements as part of the Stage 1 Redevelopment including the construction of a new multi-storey building. The new building will house inpatient wards, ambulatory, outpatient and allied health services, pathology and clinical information. Existing buildings will also be reconfigured to expand the Emergency Department, Paediatric Outpatients, Birthing Suite and Maternity areas.

At the completion of the Stage 1 Redevelopment, Campbelltown Hospital will include:

  • 90 additional inpatient beds with a capacity for a further 30
  • 11 new emergency beds
  • A state-of-the-art, two-room Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory/interventional suite to diagnose and treat abnormalities of the heart muscles or valves such as narrowed or blocked arteries and arrhythmias
  • A co-located and expanded floor comprising ambulatory care, outpatients, antenatal, allied health consulting rooms and treatment spaces
  • Relocation and expansion of supporting space for pathology and clinical information; and
  • Loading dock expansion
  • The Redevelopment will ensure the Hospital can continue to provide high quality healthcare to the growing Macarthur population

As well as helping the Hospital manage the increased demand from the growing population, the Redevelopment also provides locals with access to a greater range of healthcare services and will simplify the patient journey through the health system.
