Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital

Hospital Description and Primary Features

Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital is a 433-bed primary referral hospital in south-western Sydney.  It is a teaching hospital for UNSW and UWS medical schools.

Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital has a focus on aged care and integration of hospital care with community/GP care.  It is, however, an internationally-recognised pancreatic cancer facility and has outstanding gastroenterology services.  As well, the respiratory department is excellent, with Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital being one of the first hospitals in Sydney to use endoscopic ultrasound.  Not being a tertiary referral hospital, it lacks a cardiothoracic team, cardiac catheter laboratory, cancer radiotherapy services, and full neurosurgical services, but it is well-serviced to manage with breadth of the pathology that is present in the local community (especially diabetes and cardiovascular disease).

Terms Available

Terms available to interns include aged care, cardiology, respiratory medicine, rheumatology, neurology, renal/endocrine, gastroenterology, general surgery (breast/endocrine, general/laparoscopic/ophthalmology, colorectal, and upper gastrointestinal teams), urology and subspecialty (ENT, plastics, basic neurosurgery) surgery, orthopaedic surgery, and emergency medicine (term descriptions available here).

Terms available only to residents include psychiatry, ambulatory care, intensive care, obstetrics & gynaecology, oncology, paediatrics, and stroke/rehabilitation (term descriptions available here).

Further Training

There are a small number of senior resident (i.e. SRMO) positions available.

Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital is part of the RPA basic physician training network and at least 1 representative from Bankstown is part of the annual RPA basic physician training interviews.  As far as surgical training goes, basic surgical trainees in the Sydney South West network rotate out to Bankstown.  The emergency department is accredited for training in emergency medicine by the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine (ACEM); CMOs, registrars, and junior medical staff work in the ED.

There is a strong medical student network at Bankstown with a strong focus on teaching.  There are frequently opportunities for interns and residents to provide bedside teaching to UNSW medical students.

Facilities

There is a JMO room on level 3 (with a coffee machine, lockers, computers, and fridge), as well as a surgical registrars' room, also on level 3.  There is a good library on level 4.  Parking is available in the hospital carpark for a discounted staff rate of $23.20 a month.
