Booking Your Care
Regular check-ups during pregnancy are important for your health and your baby’s wellbeing. Visit your GP as early as possible.

After you submit your BiMP questionnaire a PDF summary is sent directly to your local hospital. Your hospital will contact you to arrange your first antenatal appointment.

Attend your first antenatal booking visit at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital before 14 weeks of pregnancy.

Education sessions for you and your support person are facilitated by a Midwife or Parent Educator to help you prepare for labour, birth, breastfeeding, and early parenting. We recommend attending these sessions between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy.

Location
The Birth Unit is located on Level 3, opposite Operating Theatres, at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital. Just follow the purple birth unit sign.
Comfortable Birth Rooms
Our unit features seven spacious birth rooms, each designed to create a calm and supportive atmosphere for you and your family.
Every room includes:
- Baths for comfort during labour
- Wireless fetal monitoring which offers flexibility and comfort while keeping track of your baby’s wellbeing as needed.
Operating Theatres
Our birthing unit is supported by modern operating theatres located close to the birth rooms. This ensures quick access to surgical care if needed, including caesarean sections, while keeping mother and baby safe.
Our team is trained to provide seamless, respectful care should your birth require additional support.
Day Assessment Unit
For women needing extra monitoring during pregnancy, we provide a dedicated Day Assessment Unit within the birthing unit.
Features include:
- Recliner chairs for short-term assessments
- A private room for procedures requiring privacy
- Care provided by a designated midwife on scheduled days
This unit ensures timely support while keeping you close to all maternity services.

Bankstown operate an open-door policy for women booked into our maternity service.
If you are worried about yourself or your baby, please come directly to the Birthing Unit located on level 3 You can contact the Birth Unit 24 hours a day on 9722 7870 to speak with a midwife.
Who can come with me and support me during labour & birth
- You may bring two birth support people with you to the hospital. These could be your partner, mother, sister, doula, or another support person.
- During labour and birth, your support people are encouraged to be present with you as much as possible, as they provide emotional and physical support.
- If you are admitted to hospital but not yet in active labour (for example for monitoring or observation), you may be asked to send your support people home until labour begins — to allow rest and manage space.
- If your labour begins overnight and your support person is not already with you, we will contact them to return to the birth unit.
We support women who choose to labour and give birth naturally through active birth.
What is Active Birth?
Active birth means staying mobile and upright during labour. You can move freely, change positions, and work with your body’s cues instead of lying in bed.
This approach is evidence-based and offers many benefits for mothers and babies.
Benefits of Active Birth
- Freedom to move helps manage contractions and progress labour
- Less need for interventions (inductions, epidurals, caesareans)
- Upright positions create more space for baby
- Shorter labour and less pain
- Greater sense of control and empowerment
- Better oxygen flow to baby
- Partners can be more involved
How We Support You
Our midwives are trained in active birth and provide equipment to keep you comfortable and mobile:
- Birthing balls (including peanut balls)
- Birth mats & bean bags
- Double showers & baths
You’re welcome to bring personal comfort items like essential oils, pillows, or music.
Maternity Ward
After your baby is born if you need to stay, you’ll move to our postnatal ward, where you can rest, recover, and begin bonding with your newborn. Our team will support you with feeding, settling, and newborn care.
Location
The Maternity Ward is located on Level 3, next door to the Birth Unit at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital. Just follow the purple birth unit sign. Visiting hours are 10am-8pm.
Midwifery Support Program
Once you go home, you may be offered follow-up through our Midwifery Support Program providing continued care and reassurance from our midwives in the comfort of your home.
Lactation consultants and midwives are here to help you feel confident as you start your parenting journey.
Special Care Nursery
Our 10 bed special care nursery provides expert care for babies who need extra support after birth, such as those born early or requiring close monitoring. Staffed by experienced paediatricians, neonatal nurses and midwives, the nursery offers a safe, nurturing environment with advanced equipment to ensure your baby’s wellbeing.
We work closely with parents to keep you involved in your baby’s care every step of the way.

At Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital, we are committed to protecting the privacy and dignity of all women, families, staff, and patients in our care. It’s important that everyone feels safe, comfortable, and respected at all times.
We understand you may wish to capture special moments, particularly around the birth of your baby. Our staff are happy to support you in doing this in a way that is appropriate, safe, and respectful to everyone present.
Before taking photos, videos, or audio recordings, please:
- Check with a staff member if you're unsure whether it’s appropriate at that time.
- Be aware that staff members have the right to decline being photographed, filmed, or recorded.
- Understand that we may ask you to stop recording if permission has not been given, or if it's deemed unsafe or inappropriate.
These guidelines apply not only during your baby’s birth, but to all aspects of your clinical care while in hospital.
To protect the privacy and confidentiality of all patients, families, and staff, the following rules apply to any content captured during your hospital stay.
You must not post or publish any photographs, video footage or recordings taken at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital on social media or any online platform without explicit permission.
This includes (but is not limited to):
YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, Snapchat, LinkedIn, blogs, or other digital platforms.
You are not permitted to post or share:
- Images or videos of other patients or staff without their clear consent
- Names or photos of staff, including staff ID badges
- Any visible patient information (e.g. medical charts, whiteboards, notes, or computer screens)
- Any recording of clinical consultations or procedures
We understand the importance of celebrating your baby's arrival and sharing special moments, but we also ask that you respect the privacy and safety of others in our care.
If you are ever unsure, please speak to a staff member before posting or sharing any content.

Digital Referral Pathways to SWSLHD
South Western Sydney Local Health District receives outpatient referrals through Consultmed, our secure online referral platform. This helps referrals reach the right service and supports timely review and processing.
Referrals can be submitted in one of three ways
Please speak with your GP, specialist, allied health professional or primary care provider and ask them to submit your referral through Consultmed.
Healthcare providers can create a free, secure account or log in using the link below.
Access ConsultmedNSW Health staff can submit referrals to SWSLHD services through Consultmed.
Staff can log in securely using their StaffLink credentials.
Staff LoginIf you already have a referral letter, you can upload it directly through the SWSLHD self-referral portal.

- Your personal details
- The reason for referral
- Relevant clinical information
- Supporting documents such as imaging or test results
Once submitted, your referral will be reviewed by the relevant hospital team. You may be contacted if additional information is required.
