Driving Assessment
An Occupational Therapy Driving Assessment is used to determine the impact a person's disability has on commencing or returning to drive in a safe, legal and independent manner.
The assessment consists of two parts, an off-road and an on-road assessment.
- Off-road assessment: reviews cognitive and physical skills related to driving. The Off Road Assessment is conducted at head2work and includes details about medical history and driving background, a physical screen, a vision screen, a cognitive screen and ability to apply current road rules.
- On-road assessment: A 1-hour drive using a dual-control vehicle within a variety of traffic conditions to determine the impact of a person's condition on their driving. A Driving Instructor trained in rehabilitation and the Occupational Therapist look at any areas of concern that arose during the off -road assessment and may trial vehicle modifications or special driving techniques to improve performance.
A remediation program may be recommended following assessment to gain competence in using vehicle modifications, to learn new driving techniques or to improve driving confidence. The program involves completion of driving lessons with the Driving Instructor and is monitored by the Occupational Therapist.
Driving performance is measured against Transport for NSW (Formerly Roads and Maritime Service and Roads and Traffic Authority) standards.
