Preparing for an Appointment - Vestibular

  • The patient needs to ask their GP to check that their ears are free of wax prior to their appointment. Ear wax can prevent us from obtaining accurate results. If ear wax is present, the patient may be asked to return on another day to complete testing.
  • It is recommended that the patient also brings a list of their current medications. If they can tolerate it, it is suggested that they do not take any medication for dizziness or sleeping tablets for at least 48 hours prior to the appointment. Please check with the doctor who prescribed them that it is safe to do so. All other medications should be taken as usual.
  • No alcohol for at least 24 hours prior to the appointment.
  • No eye makeup should be worn on the day of the appointment as this can affect the recording of eye movements, which is an important component of the tests.
  • One of the tests we perform can make the patient feel a little dizzy (only for a minute at a time). Therefore, it is advised that the patient does not eat a heavy meal prior to coming in. If possible, it is recommended to not eat anything for three hours before their appointment.
