Dr Scott MacKenzie - Head of Department
Dr Scott MacKenzie studied for his undergraduate medical degree in Aberdeen, Scotland. He went on to complete basic surgical training and a period of clinical research in Glasgow before specialty General Surgical training in Edinburgh with a particular focus on Colorectal Surgery. He was then the International Colorectal Fellow at Concord Hospital in 2006/07 and stayed on as the Surgical Superintendent attached to the Concord Colorectal Unit. In 2010 Dr Mackenzie was appointed by Liverpool Hospital as the Western Sydney University Senior Lecturer in Surgery where he continues as Consultant Surgeon and Head of the Colorectal Surgery Unit.
Dr Mackenzie has a particular interest in minimally invasive, laparoscopic and robotic surgery for both cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. He has ongoing interest in operative surgical skills training and simulation. Dr MacKenzie holds GESA certification in both upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and Colonoscopy.

Professor Les Bokey
Professor Les Bokey AM., M.S., F. R.A.C.S., F.R.C.S. (Glas.) (Hon.) is Foundation Professor of Surgery and Clinical Dean, Western Sydney University at Liverpool Hospital. He is the Director of Research for the South Western Sydney Local Health District, Institute Director at The Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research and Director of Surgery at Liverpool Hospital. His research interests include screening, and early diagnosis of bowel cancer, outcomes after surgery for bowel cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, robotics and automation in health. He is the Director of The South Western Institute for Robotics and Automation in Health (SWIRAH). His expertise and technical innovations, especially in rectal cancer surgery, are acknowledged internationally.
Professor Bokey has worked at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Gothenburg and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Before joining Western Sydney University, he was Head of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine and Associate Dean of Surgical Sciences at Sydney University.
He has been awarded The Order of Australia Medal for service to medicine as colorectal surgeon and establishment of surgical education programs, research, and medical administration. He has received several honorary degrees from various International Universities and Societies.
Dr Katherine M Gibson BSc (Hons) MSc FRACS
Dr. Gibson is a Colorectal Surgeon at Liverpool Hospital, Sydney Southwest Private Hospital and Campbelltown Private Hospital. She is the Clinical Director of Gastroenterology/Liver, Upper GI, Colorectal and Urology Services for the Sydney South West Local Health District and has been Head of Department of General Surgery at Liverpool Hospital.
Dr Gibson graduated from the University of London in 1997.
She carried out surgical training in Australia and she obtained her Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2006. She worked at Liverpool Hospital as the Senior Surgical Registrar before undergoing specialist Fellowship with the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand, training in Sydney and Melbourne. Since 2010 Dr Gibson has worked as a specialist colorectal surgeon at Liverpool Hospital since 2010.
Dr Gibson has a primary interest in laparoscopic surgery for colorectal disease, particularly colorectal cancer. She also has an interest in the surgical management of perianal conditions and fistula disease. Dr Gibson is accredited through the Gastroenterological Society of Australia in both upper and lower endoscopy.

Dr Andrew Gilmore
Assoc. Prof Andrew Gilmore is a Colorectal Surgeon at Liverpool Hospital and Macquarie University Hospital. Dr Gilmore's special interests in Colorectal Surgery include complex redo laparoscopic techniques, Natural Orifice Specimen Extraction (NOSE) for colectomy and strategies to enable laparoscopic colectomy in the obese. Dr Gilmore is the Chairman of the Liverpool Complex Pelvic Surgery Unit and regularly performs exenteration surgery for locally advanced colorectal, gynaecological and urological cancers and for complications of radiation therapy. He performs major abdominal wall reconstruction for large incisional and recurrent abdominal hernias. He performs routine and complex therapeutic colonoscopy.

Dr Assad Zahid
Dr. Assad Zahid completed his General Surgical training in Sydney and received his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He was awarded the Mitchell J Notaras Scholarship in Colorectal Surgery for three consecutive years to undertake advanced training in colorectal surgery. This was awarded to him by the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSSANZ) and the University of Sydney. His advanced fellowship training in colorectal surgery was completed at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney in advanced pelvic malignancy. He then completed further fellowships in the United Kingdom at the prestigious St Mark's and Basingstoke Hospitals.
Dr. Zahid performs surgery for both general surgical conditions and colorectal disorders. He has training in robotic & advanced laparoscopic surgery and is able to perform surgery using minimally invasive techniques. Dr. Zahid also performs diagnostic and interventional colonoscopies. All his cancer patients are discussed at the Colorectal Multidisciplinary team meetings.
Dr Zahid has a keen interest in research and education. He has published in over 40 peer-review journals. He has completed a Master of Surgery as well as a Master of Philosophy. And he is currently completing a PhD in Surgical Education and training.
