Welcome to the Respiratory and Sleep Medicine Department website at Liverpool Hospital.
The Respiratory Unit aims to achieve the following goals:

  • High quality, tertiary level care for patients with respiratory disease, sleep disorders and all forms of tuberculosis
  • A high standard of education and training in respiratory medicine for undergraduate and post-graduate medical, nursing, and allied health staff
  • High quality, international standard research in respiratory and clinical science

We provide the following services:

  • Specialist outpatient clinics for patients with general respiratory disorders including lung cancer, sleep disorders
  • Comprehensive tuberculosis (TB) service including diagnosis and management of all forms of active tuberculosis, contact and immigration screening for TB
  • Multidisciplinary clinics for patients with pulmonary hypertension and motor neuron disease
  • Respiratory chronic care service, providing community based care for patients with chronic respiratory disease
  • Bronchoscopy including highly specialised procedures such as endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), rigid bronchoscopy, airway dilatation, tumour ablation, airway stenting, endobronchial valves
  • Pleural intervention service including pleural biopsies and intercostal catheter insertion under ultrasound guidance
  • Pulmonary rehabilitation program – a twice weekly education and exercise program designed to improve quality of life and exercise tolerance for patients with COPD
  • Lung function testing – comprehensive service including standard lung function tests, bronchial challenge, cardiopulmonary exercise tests, allergy testing, high altitude simulation studies, shunt studies and impulse oscillometry
  • Sleep investigation unit provides sleep studies – diagnostic, CPAP titration, non-invasive ventilation titration, multiple sleep latency testing, maintenance of wakefulness testing, CPAP education and mask fitting, sleep nurse clinics for CPAP acclimatisation and management issues, equipment pool for patients eligible for home sleep appliances under the ENABLE scheme

Location

Respiratory and sleep clinics are located in Clinic 111, level 1, Clinical Services Building.

TB services are provided in the Chest Clinic, level 3 Health Services Building, located on the corner of Campbell and Goulburn streets, Liverpool.

The lung function laboratory is located in Clinic 111, level 1, Clinical Services Building.

The sleep laboratory is located in ward 4G, level 4, Clinical Services Building.
Pulmonary rehabilitation is located on level 1, Don Everett Building
