Medical Assessment Units (MAU) - Liverpool

About

The Department of Acute Medicine/MAU cares for patients admitted from the Emergency Department with a variety of medical problems, where the expected stay in hospital is likely to be less than 4 days. About 70% of these patients will be admitted initially to the Medical Assessment Unit, which is designed for rapid and intensive multidisciplinary care of such patients. The aim of Acute Medicine is to provide rapid assessment and treatment so that recovery takes place rapidly.

The Department of Acute Medicine/MAU is staffed by medical specialists in general and acute medicine, who are on-site for 12 hours per day each weekday and 8 hours per day on weekends and public holidays. You will be seen by that specialist shortly after arrival at the Hospital if you arrive within those hours, otherwise the next morning. If you need to be reviewed by other specialists, this will be arranged and will be coordinated by the Department of Acute Medicine/MAU.

The conditions that are commonly treated by the Department of Acute Medicine/MAU include:

  • Cellulitis
  • Pneumonia
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Gastroenteritis
  • Viral illnesses
  • Heart failure
  • Dizziness and vertigo
  • Alcohol and drug intoxication/withdrawal
