Ambulatory Care - Liverpool
About Us
The Ambulatory Care Unit is part of the Hospital Avoidance Program conducted at Liverpool Hospital, allowing patients to either avoid hospitalisation or to be discharged early. There are two major elements of the Unit: the PIXI (Procedures, Investigations and Infusions) service and the Hospital in the Home service and two associated elements: the Wound Clinic and the High Risk Foot Clinic.
Services:
- The PIXI Unit provides an environment for minor medical procedures, investigations and infusions of drugs and blood products. It is a purpose-built clinic with 10 chair/bed spaces and four ensuite single rooms. The majority of its work is delivery of infusions of drugs and blood products. It is staffed by nurses who are highly skilled in insertion of cannulas into veins.
- The Hospital in the Home Service coordinates delivery of Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy and Vacuum Assisted Closure (VAC) dressings. Patients receive their intravenous treatment while living at home, and either visit hospital or are visited at their residence for medical review. The Clinical Nurse Consultants for Continuum of Care coordinate the process, with service delivery from Community Health Nurses, and medical overview from the Ambulatory Care Unit medical staff in liaison with the patient's specialist and general practitioner.
- The Wound Clinic assesses and advises on treatment of chronic wounds, particularly venous stasis ulcers of the legs. It is coordinated by the Clinical Nurse Consultant in Wound Care with medical overview from the Ambulatory Care Unit medical staff.
- The High Risk Foot Clinic assesses and manages foot problems in patients who are at risk of amputation, in most cases from infection or arterial disease or both. Most of the patients have diabetes. The Department of Podiatry operates the clinic and the Ambulatory Care Unit provides medical support in conjunction with the Department of Endocrinology, Infectious Diseases and Vascular Surgery.
- PIXI is located at Clinic 116 on the 1st floor of the new Clinical Building.
Its hours of operation are:
Monday - Friday 8 am to 5.30 pm
Saturday - Sunday 9 am to 5.30 pm
- The Hospital in the Home Service can be accessed Monday to Friday through the PIXI Unit. Most clinical reviews for patients in the service occur at Clinic 117 on the 1st floor of the new Clinical Building.
- The Wound Clinic is located in Clinic 117 on the 1st floor of the new Clinical Building.
It operates two clinics per week.
Its hours of operation are:
Tuesday - 1.30 pm to 5 pm
Thursday - 1.30 pm to 5 pm
- The High Risk Foot Clinic details are available on the Liverpool Hospital Website. The clinic is located at Clinic 112 on the 1st floor of the new Clinical Building.
Its hours of operation are:

Question: What should I bring to my appointment in PIXI?
You should bring your regular medications as your stay may extend over a number of hours, your Medicare card, and any medication that is planned for administration in PIXI on that day.
Question: How long will I have to wait to see a doctor at the Clinic appointments?
Although we do try to ensure that you are seen at the time of your appointment, urgent medical work within the hospital can result on occasions in considerable delays.
