Clinical Genetics
Fact sheets/Information
Patients are referred by their family doctor, medical clinic, or other health care professional when:
- There is a family history of a genetic condition
- The patient, or partner, has a genetic condition or a suspected genetic condition
- A child has delayed development, intellectual disability or autism
- A child has a congenital disorder or defect
- A pregnancy has been exposed to an environmental or chemical risk to the baby
- A pregnancy is at an increased risk for problems based on prenatal screening
If your baby is at increased risk of a problem based on prenatal testing, genetic counselling can provide an opportunity for you to obtain information and discuss:
- What the results mean for you
- The options available at this time
- Whether you want further testing
- What course of action you will take
