Clinical Genetics

Fact sheets/Information

Patients are referred by their family doctor, medical clinic, or other health care professional when:

  • There is a family history of a genetic condition
  • The patient, or partner, has a genetic condition or a suspected genetic condition
  • A child has delayed development, intellectual disability or autism
  • A child has a congenital disorder or defect
  • A pregnancy has been exposed to an environmental or chemical risk to the baby
  • A pregnancy is at an increased risk for problems based on prenatal screening

If your baby is at increased risk of a problem based on prenatal testing, genetic counselling can provide an opportunity for you to obtain information and discuss:

  • What the results mean for you
  • The options available at this time
  • Whether you want further testing
  • What course of action you will take

The Department of Clinical Genetics co-ordinates the following clinics:

  • General Genetics
  • Prenatal Genetics
  • Paediatric Genetics
  • Cardiac Genetics
  • Neurogenetics
