Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to bring with me to my appointment

  • Medicare card (if you do not have a Medicare card you will be required to pay a fee)
  • Referral from GP/referring doctor, healthcare professional
  • As much information as possible about your family's medical background such as doctor's letters, reports, test results, baby's Blue Book/health record and x-rays.
  • Photographs of family members, especially those affected by specific conditions and including photos at different ages if possible.
  • Details of family history and medical conditions.
  • A list of questions you wish to ask.
  • Your partner, or a support person, is welcome to come with you.

After the appointment

  • In the weeks after your first appointment a letter will be sent both to you and your referring doctor summarising the things discussed during the appointment and outlining the plan for any future tests or appointments that may be required.
  • The results from genetic tests may take anywhere from several weeks to several months. Your doctor or counsellor will advise you of the expected date. Once the results are available, you may be called in for a follow up appointment.
  • You are welcome to call the clinic to speak to a counsellor at any time if you have any concerns while you wait for your results.
