Aboriginal Child and Family Health

The Aboriginal Child and Family Health service supports Aboriginal families from pregnancy to when the children start school. The service respects culture and tradition and understands the challenges that some families face.
The service offers:

  • Breastfeeding information and support
  • Cultural connection
  • Health and development checks
  • Home visits from pregnancy to school age with an Aboriginal Health Worker and Child and Family Health Nurse
  • Parent education
  • Parent and family support groups
  • Access to other health supports as needed

The program helps children to:

  • Be culturally connected and develop a sense of Aboriginal identity
  • Develop well both physically and emotionally
  • Get ready for primary school

The program helps mothers and families to:

  • Be culturally connected and have a strong sense of Aboriginal identity in their home life
  • Be confident when making decisions about their child's health
  • Have good health during pregnancy and after pregnancy
  • Make good lifestyle choices e.g. food choices, exercise, reduce smoking
  • Provide a good environment for learning and growing
  • Return to work or study

Parents or carers of Aboriginal children aged 0-5 years living in South Western Sydney Local Health District can access the service.

Referrals to the Aboriginal Child and Family Health service can be made by anyone.
