FAQ

Is there an Interpreter Service?
Yes, Interpreter Services are available if you or your family member/friend speaks another language. This is a free service. Translation services can be provided in person or by phone and are available seven days per week. Ask staff to arrange an interpreter for you. AUSLAN Interpreters are also available.

Is there somewhere I can visit in private?
If you would like some privacy while visiting, there are private areas available in all Units. Please talk to a staff member for this to be arranged.

Can children visit the Mental Health Services facilities?
Children are welcome to visit the facilities however, it is important that this is well-managed. All visits by children should be planned ahead and the NUM and/or treating team will decide whether it is possible on the day. Children visiting any of the Units should be well-supervised by a responsible adult at all times. In some facilities, visits may only take place in a private or specified room.

Can my family member/friend leave the Mental Health Unit?
Please check with the treating team regarding leave from the Units.  A balance between safety and independence is important. In the early stages of an admission there may be legal constraints limiting leave time. When possible, staff encourage a process of graded leave, increasing over time.

Can I access information about my family member/friend?
Under the Mental Health Act 2007, the nominated primary carer has specified rights to information and involvement regarding the care of the patient, and to be informed of and attend Magistrate hearings. There is a regular meeting of staff involved in the care of the patient discuss the patient’s progress which is called a “care review”. It may be possible for family or carers to attend this meeting and/or other consultations. The staff can best advise you regarding attendance. Where possible, it is also recommended that you discuss this with the patient.
