Bankstown-Lidcombe - Gastroenterology, Hepatology and EndoscopyThe Department of Gastroenterology provides regular outpatient clinics in Gastroenterology, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and advanced liver disease. All patients undergoing endoscopic procedures are sedated and monitored by anaesthetists.

Bankstown Endoscopy Unit is a specialty unit within the operating theatre complex. The nursing staff are specifically trained in all aspects of endoscopy nursing and the NSW Endoscopy Information System - ProVation, is used to record all procedures.

The Unit operates as part of the Peri Operative Service which provides admission, recovery and discharge services for the Endoscopy Unit. The Endoscopy Unit is open Monday to Friday and provides emergency services out of hours when required.

The Endoscopy Unit offers patients a wide variety of endoscopic procedures including:

  • Diagnostic gastroscopy and colonoscopy

  • Therapeutic gastroscopy including dilation of strictures, insertion of Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) tubes and  insertion of stents

  • Therapeutic colonoscopy including polypectomy, EMR and colonic stent insertion

  • Barrett's Oesophagus treatment including endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), argon plasma coagulation (APC) and radiofrequency ablation. Bankstown Hospital is one of the few public units to offer this treatment.

  • Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) including aspiration and biopsy of gastro-oesophageal submucosal lesions and pancreato-biliary cysts and masses.

  • Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) including stent insertion for biliary obstruction and stone removal

  • Antegrade and Retrograde Double balloon Enteroscopy (DBE). Bankstown Hospital is one of the two public units to offer this service.
