How can I become an Interpreter or Translator?

  • Interpreting

Our service employs interpreters on a full time, part time and sessional contract basis depending on demand for a particular language. Our interpreters and translators are accredited by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI).

As part time and full time positions become available they are advertised in the Sydney Morning Herald and ethnic press. So keep an eye out! All positions are advertised on the SWSLHD Intranet and Internet Websites.

For both, staff and sessional panel positions there is a minimum qualification of NAATI (National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters) accreditation of Para-professional Interpreter level (formerly level 2) or Professional Interpreter level (formerly level 3) - see information on courses under education.

Health Care Interpreters constantly update their knowledge about their community, the health care system, and diseases and conditions. It means that they will provide a better service to you and to NESB client/patient. Medical Terminology and our own Orientation Course are the courses they must complete. Once they are in the service they can then access numerous courses provided by the NSW Department of Health (Professional Development Committee) and other courses such as Mental Health Course, a Family Planning Course, Sexual Assault Workshop, HIV/AIDS Workshop, Domestic Violence Workshop, Dementia Workshop and In-service Sessions on different medical topics.

If you would like more information about interpreters or how to become an interpreter, please contact the Interpreters, Health Translations Unit, Research & Training Manager, phone: 8738 6805.

  • Translating

Our Translations Unit has a panel of contract translators, who are utilised to complete chargeable translation requests. The minimum qualification requirement for a translator is NAATI (former level 3), unless NAATI testing is unavailable in a particular language at this level.

If you wish to join the panel contact the Interpreters, Health Translations Unit, Research & Training Manager, via email or 8738 6805, for application forms and requirements for admission to the panel of translators.
