Qualifications
Our interpreters are accredited by National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI).
Accreditation is awarded on the basis of successfully completing a university or technical college Interpreting and Translating (I/T) course. Where courses are not available, accreditation is awarded on the basis of an I/T NAATI testing program.
In some cases, accreditation is awarded following Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), when applicants are graduates of recognised overseas I/T university courses.

Continuing Education
Health Care Interpreter Services in NSW have a Professional Development Committee, which determines training needs of interpreters, develops and runs courses accessed by all staff and many sessional interpreters. These courses are:
Basic Orientation Course, Mental Health Course, Ethics Workshop, Interpreting in Specialist Health Care Areas, Translation Workshop, Dementia Awareness Training, Sexual Assault Workshop, HIV/AIDS Workshop, Competency Based Training and others.
All interpreters have to complete an accredited Medical Terminology Course.
All staff and many sessional interpreters attend regular in-service sessions on current medical or ethical topics and all the courses deemed necessary for Area staff, e.g. Child Protection Training.

- • Interpreters participate in the District's health promotion health education activities to the community as well as provide information on to interagencies or community groups.

Language Glossaries are being developed by qualified health care interpreters/translators designed to standardise terminology used within the health services.
