The allocation of the appointment time will be based on the information provided as per our referral guidelines available on our website. Please ensure that you provide the information we require to ensure an appropriate appointment for your patient (emergency, urgent or routine). We would appreciate it if you could nominate a specialist from the clinic that is most appropriate to patients condition. This aims to facilitate continuity of care, clinical handover and patient-centred care, and provides a key contact for communication at the clinic. With the patient’s consent, patients with a valid Medicare card issued a referral to a named medical specialist will not have out-of-pocket fees for the consultation. If the nominated specialist has a longer wait time than other specialists within the clinic and it is clinically appropriate, your patient may be contacted and given the option of seeing another specialist at an earlier date. If you prefer not to nominate a specialist, your patient would be seen by a treating medical specialist determined by the hospital which may vary between appointments.
The Medical condition guidelines for the specialist services are not intended to preclude a referral where the diagnosis is unclear. These diagnoses are generally accepted clinical practice and judgment must prevail. If you have any concerns regarding appointments or change in condition of your patient, please contact the Department on 028738 4088 and ask to speak with the Advanced Trainee or Specialist On-call Once complete please fax back to us on (02) 8738 3561 so we can make an appointment.
