What are Australian Standards?

The CLIN Libraries have online access to Australian Standards and ISO Standards.

Standards are published documents that set out specifications, procedures and guidelines that aim to ensure products, services, and systems are safe, consistent, and reliable. They cover a variety of subjects, including consumer products and services, the environment, construction, energy and water utilities, and more.

New South Wales and Commonwealth governments often refer to Australian Standards® (AS) or joint Australian/New Zealand Standards (AS/NZS) in their legislation. When this happens, these standards can become mandatory.

Standards can be a range of different types of guidance documents, including:
  • Australian Standards
  • International standards and joint standards
  • codes
  • specifications
  • handbooks
  • guidelines

What are the Benefits of Standards?

Australian and ISO standards are purchased, upon request by the CLIN Libraries, for departments and services to satisfy the requirement of timely access to information to ensure that SWSLHD services and systems are safe, consistent, and reliable.

What is the difference between ISO and Australian Standards?

Standards Australia, the national standards body organisation, prepares and publishes Australian standards and adopts internationally-aligned standards in Australia.

International Organization for Standardization (ISO) creates and approves International Standards that are used or adopted by national and regional standards organisations. ISO creates documents that provide requirements, specifications, guidelines or characteristics that can be used consistently to ensure that materials, products, processes and services are fit for their purpose.

How do I request a standard?

To request a copy of an Australian Standard please complete the online form. International Standards (ISO) and Regional Standards (EN) may also be requested. If you have any questions please contact your local CLIN Library.
