Patient Stories

Helping yourself and others to understand a cancer journey

Share your story

Sharing your experience with cancer can play an important part in helping others to understand what it is like, plus help you to reflect on your own feelings and priorities in life . Published stories can give tips, coping ideas and hope to people newly diagnosed with cancer and can assist their carers to prioritise things that may be more important. Stories can also assist health staff to gain a broader understanding of the impact of treatment processes on the whole family.  If you'd like to share your experience, we would like to talk to you about the various ways you can share your story.

Story telling methods
Stories can be collected in many ways using creative means such as art  - or by talking to our Wellness Manager or a journalist from our media department. Stories can be produced in a written, scrap book or an audio form using creative mediums such as sculpture or, poetry. To preserve privacy, story tellers' names can be given a pseudonym.

Story sharing uses
Collected Stories might be shared and used for the following purposes:

  1. Staff education to help staff be more aware of the patients and families perspective and priorities
  2. To assist people to create their own narrative and personally reflect on experiences and personal strengths
  3. Via the SWSLHD of the Cancer Services Wellness Pages section on the website for patients and Carers/Family members to use.
  4. For inclusion in media articles to increase general public awareness and understanding about cancer journeys and what is involved at different stages
