About our service

Medical Oncology provided consultative advice on clinical care to 10,000 cancer patients in 2007, and 9,500 chemotherapy and combined modality therapies.

All types of solid tumours are managed within a framework of comprehensive and coordinated care. Multi-disciplinary meetings are held regularly for cancer groups including; breast, lung, melanoma, upper gastrointestinal, urological, head and neck.

Most chemotherapy treatments are provided in an outpatient day ward setting and are administered by accredited Chemotherapy Nurses.

At both our Centres, there are on-site pharmacy staff to prepare drug orders. And supporting patients during their treatment, is a full range of allied health  support including Dieticians, Social Workers, Physiotherapists, Speech Therapists, Nurse Co-ordinators and Clinical Psychologists.

Staff are involved in both clinical and basic research pertaining to cancer.

There are 4 Medical Oncologists at Liverpool and 3 at Macarthur, with 6 registrars. The Oncologists are tumour site sub-specialised, and attend major multidisciplinary clinics across the area.

Information Technology

Our integrated patient information system called "Multi-Access" boasts utilities that match the best in the country, and functionality that is superior to other oncology systems available on the market today. In pursuit of the paperless clinic, documentation is scanned in for medical review, and electronic treatment orders, paperless clinics, voice recognition software to dictate.

Research

Active participation in our research program is supported by full-time research staff. Details of some of the clinical trials can be found on our clinical trials webpage. Link to Clinical trials

Education

Regular educational, peer review and audit meetings are held throughout the year and an extensive range of trials are run with various cancer groups.

Oncologists are involved in teaching oncology in collaboration with University of Western Sydney, Macarthur, and University of NSW undergraduate medical programs. Medical oncology Registrars meet the NSW Cancer Council standards within the Ideal Oncology Curriculum.

Summary
